Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is a typical example of a Mediterranean city. Throughout history, the development and expansion of the city has continued around the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Diocletian's Palace dates back to the 4th century and is one of the best preserved buildings of this type in Europe. Besides this unique monument, it is possible to find a large number of other archaeological remains in the city and its immediate surroundings, not only from the Roman period, but also from other historical periods.
